Selecting a Theme for Your Photoshoot

You have your boudoir session booked and now you’re in the next phase: planning! Even just having a basic idea of what you want your session to look like is a great start. It’s also a guaranteed way to make sure you’re getting exactly what you want out of it, and the best place to start? Your theme! That can mean many things in regards to your photoshoot. It can be the reason why you’re doing it (Bridal, maternity, self-love) or it can be an aesthetic (Vintage, risqué, floral).

A theme can be portrayed by the outfits you wear, the time of day your shoot is, the angles of the photos, and the lighting. A shoot done during golden hour with warm light and floral or frilly lingerie is going to set a different tone from one done at night with dramatic lighting and bold lingerie. As you’re buying your newest intimates set and scrolling through Pinterest for inspiration, think about the aesthetics you want for your photos and why you’re doing it.

If you’re not sure where to start, here’s a few ideas to get you going.

Bridal

Aesthetic

There’s many different aesthetics you can convey in your photos. You can be bold and mysterious with low light and a mask or blindfold. You can be beachy and breezy with linens and daylight streaming through the curtains. Vintage can be characterized by slip dresses and maybe some pearls for a classic look. Overall, your aesthetic is up to you – you know it best! So, bring a little bit of it into your boudoir.

Holiday

Love decking the halls for Christmas or donning a costume for Halloween? You can incorporate this into your shoot for an especially fun theme. This type of boudoir could also make for a fun and sexy gift to your partner.

Props

Bringing a prop can be a great way to fully communicate your theme. Mask for masquerade, blindfold for a risqué shot, flowers for a flirty vibe, or books for a smart and sexy look are all examples of using props to enhance your shoot. Just be sure to review our post regarding props and what kinds are okay to bring to your session!
